November 28 - Ottawa, Canada - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in response to North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile:
“Canada condemns in the strongest terms North Korea’s continued ballistic missile launches, in direct violation of many United Nations Security Council resolutions. This latest launch is a reckless and dangerous act that threatens regional and global security.
“Canada is unwavering in its support for Japan, South Korea, and other partners in the region. Canada fully supports regional and international efforts to address the North Korean threat, including through sanctions that pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
“North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs present a direct threat to the world. This threat cannot be tolerated.
“Against a backdrop of continued North Korean provocations, I have repeatedly engaged my counterparts from the United States, China, South Korea, and Japan, among others, including while visiting Asia this month.
“Canada believes that a diplomatic solution to the North Korea crisis is essential and possible. Today, Canada is announcing that it will soon convene a meeting of foreign ministers in Canada, co-hosted with the United States, to address this most pressing international security threat. A specific date and location for this meeting will be announced in due course.’’
